Birth flowers are an old-fashioned custom.  Within the identical vein as birthstones, birth month flowers are flowers selected to coincide with a particular month.  Each blossom then has its own import with the language of flowers, harking back to the Victorian days.

Different months have different meanings.  For example, January’s flower would be the carnation.  The carnation typically means fascination, honor, and love.  Also, the particular tint of the bloom carries a connotation as well.  To provide an example, if you give someone a scarlet carnation, it connotes “my spirit longs for you.”  A pink carnation connotes “I’ll never forget you.”  A yellow one is given if you are disappointed with someone.  And a banded carnation connotes you want to be with them.

To get more thorough, each flower has its individual story.  The carnation has been grown for 2000 years.  It was originally used in Greece for a crown for victors.  Over time, it’s been used as a gift to honor parents, and as a funereal flower.

A flower also can denote various things to different cultures.  In America and Canada, white and red carnations are used to honor moms on Mother’s Day.  In France, carnations are the representation of misfortune and bad fortune, yet they are the national flower of Spain.   In Korea, carnations are used to credit both parents plus teachers.

So if you are looking to present someone a posy of birth month flowers for their birthday, be sure to give them the exact same number of flowers that they are years of age.  This is considered providential.  Moreover, think about what the individual color means before you offer them that flower.  You don’t want to give a flower with a unpleasant connotation for a birthday!
